Being Still

Recently I was having a great conversation with someone about the need to be still so we can hear our spirit speak. I found stillness means different things to each of us. For some raking the garden or washing the dishes can be just as meditative as someone who sits quietly without motion.

I have done both. Pruning the dead leaves of a plant in my garden can become symbolic or thoughtful. As I cut away the dead leaf I ask: What in my life, my spirit, is dead and needs pruning? Somedays I need to sit in stillness listening to my breathing with hand on heart and turn my mind to the calm repetition of my heart beating.

In my quest to find resources which enhance my life, especially around meditation and stillness, I have found a few things I come back to time and time again.

  • A cup of hot tea or coffee enjoyed in the pre-dawn hour, huddled on an outside bench while inhaling the pure mountain air, is balm for my tired soul.
  • Books that bring the body and mind connection together are a solid requirement on my bookshelf. The Little Book of Mudra Meditations is currently on the top of the book pile. You know, that pile you go back to time and time again.
  • Mama Earth! I love her and defend her. Nothing gives me more peace than immersing my senses in the calming language of nature. The smell of earth as I saunter along a wilderness trail has eased the pain of grief, diluted anger, and brought forth many revelations and points of growth.
  • Praying from a place of gratitude somehow instantly gives me peace. Whatever I am fretting about becomes second and placed safely in the cocoon of grace.
  • Breath work and listening to 432hz music brings focus to my body. What is my body doing for me right now? Wow! Look at what my body is doing for me right now!

Stillness takes practice. It can be uncomfortable to sit without the chatter most of us have become accustomed too. In these times it is greatly important to quiet the soul and allow the spirit to be heard.

May stillness take up residence in the noisy places.
